U2 Song Countdown Part 3 (45-31)
This month, I am looking at my personal ranking of U2 songs, based on the conversation I had with my son a while back. Eventually I might do a few essays on some of these songs, but here I might just occasionally give my typical one-line thought:
45. “Seconds” (War)
The cold war was a big deal to us Gen Xers.
44. “The Electric Co.” (Boy)
Watch out for the bad side of institutions!
43. “Every Breaking Wave” (Songs of Innocence)
You have to risk vulnerability.
42. “When Love Comes To Town” (Rattle and Hum)
Don’t let pride and regret cost you redemption!
41. “Two Hearts Beat as One” (War)
Faith and Desire.
40. “All Because of You” (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb)
We are who we are thanks to grace.
39. “Elevation” (All That You Can’t Leave Behind)
We need spiritual lift.
38. “If God Will Send His Angels” (Pop)
Confronting the frequent silence of God.
37. “Angel of Harlem” (Rattle and Hum)
Celebrate music.
36. “One Tree Hill” (The Joshua Tree)
Death is the enemy.
35. “Desire” (Rattle and Hum)
Idolatry entices.
34. “Even Better than the Real Thing” (Achtung Baby)
Advertising (and social media) are untrustworthy!
33. “Vertigo” (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb)
Again, temptation and idolatry are hazardous.
32. “The Fly” (Achtung Baby)
Sin will try to convince you you are free.
31. “Staring at the Sun” (Pop)
Don’t kid yourself. Virtue signaling is an empty pursuit.
