Trust God, Not Man (Isaiah 17:1-18:7)

Isaiah continues his tour of woes pronounced against the nations. YHWH is the God of all the earth, not just Israel. However, here the woe is against Damascus AND ISRAEL! The northern Kingdom is in view here. This oracle also continues Isaiah’s big message. “Woe to those who look to their own devices rather than YHWH for protection!”

The prophecy used here in Isaiah’s written work is clearly from a time earlier than the historic events we see. Israel is definitely going to be defeated. It is a done deal even in the days when Judah is being tempted to look to worldly powers for protection. So, the message is clear. Isaiah is not just a prophet warning of potential calamity. He has already predicted things that have come to pass. His readers can count on his truth. Today, we his readers can too. When the world throws danger, challenges, threats, and evil your way, do not look to earthly means of protection. Do not trust the work of your own hands to save you. Do not look to mighty men and governments. Turn to God!

The second half of this message, in chapter 18, is especially powerful. Emissaries are called from the far ends of the earth to deliver a message. Their message? God in His stillness, observant and poised, is more powerful and impressive than anything mankind has to offer.
