Oracle 5: Egypt (South) Universal Plans (Isaiah 19:1-20:6)
In Isaiah’s day, as the northern kingdom had fallen, Judah was continually tempted to throw its lot in with Egypt to resist Assyria. Isaiah opposes this because his ever repeated message is that God’s people should turn to God and not the powers of men for their salvation. Here, Isaiah delivers a woe against Egypt predicting its downfall. God’s people should not turn to Egypt, because there is no salvation there. The problems people face are ultimately spiritual in nature, and the only true salvation lies in the spiritual realm. God should be trusted.
This passage does not end there, however. Isaiah prophesies the restoration of Egypt. They too will be brought into God’s people! He doesn’t just end there. He compares Egypt to Assyria. All of humanity are important to God. Just as a remnant of Israel will be saved by God, o portion of all peoples will be rescued by God’s love as well. The door back into a restored relationship with our Creator is there for anyone who will go through.
