Oracle 10: Tyre, West (Isaiah 23:1-18)
Isaiah concludes this second set of oracles concerning the nations looking west to Tyre. Once again, we see a nation facing destruction, despite their “greatness.” Babylon to the east was a power in the military sense, Tyre was an economic force. Yet none of their money, trade relations, or fleet of ships would save them from the realities and dangers of the world. Judah should not look to them for salvation. There are plenty of historical options to choose from as to how this oracle would be fulfilled. The point, however, is not the event itself, but the way that this certain future illustrates God’s message for His people. No earthly power can save us from the threats we face. We need to turn to and trust in God.
Yet, just as Egypt in the first set of five oracles was shown as an enemy of God that would enter into His kingdom, Tyre is also destined to turn to Him as well. God is not just the God of Israel and Judah. His people are formed from every nation and every place on Earth. The world is His and He is the God of all who will turn to Him and trust in Him.
