Zion’s King (Isaiah 24:21-23)

On that day
YHWH will punish
the host of heaven, in heaven,
the kings of the earth, on the earth.
Gathered together
Prisoners in a pit;
Shut up in a dungeon,
Punished after many days
The white one will blush and
The hot one will pale
For YHWH of Hosts reigns on
Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
His glory over the ancient.

Isaiah’s vision following all the utter failure of humanity to find purpose in their rebellion, concerns “that day.” The time when God will break into creation with judgement and make every wrong right. He will punish every evil, and hold every power accountable, those in the heavenly dimensions in their realms, and earthly powers on earth.

They will be gathered up and held in dark dankness, awaiting His judgement. This is contrasted with the light and glory of God, under which the moon and sun pale in comparison. Those who hope for the world to be made right rejoice in this vision. However, we also recognize and dread the fact that we all participate in the rebellion. We all have thought we could do so much better. We all have failed in our aimless, purposeless arrogance.
