when the world is out to get me
when there’s no way out in sight
there is no fear in ten thousand dangers
there is no power in fright
the Lord is my protection
refreshed is my rest at night
my enemies lie defeated
my savior and my might

(Notes from 9/3/1998) “Psalm of Trust in the Morning”

I don’t have many adversaries, at least not in the sense that David did. I can only imagine what it was like to fight and do battle back in the days before all the technology they have today. I think, though, that this is a prayer offered in response to fear, and THAT I understand.

What a comfort to know that the God that created everything is my shield! I have no need to fear rejection, spiritual attack, or mere booby-men in my mind. For that matter I fear no evil, and in this city that could be a reality.

And this isn’t some abstract protection. David, supporting my idea that this is offered in fear, really asks God to lay into the enemy! Or, in this version (which tends to be accurate of the Hebrew) God already has taken care of the enemy. (I was reading Psalms in the ASV then.)
