The Question: …And what does that mean for Me? (Luke 11:27-36)

Jesus continues on the theme of the decision that each person must make about Him. If He is from God and not from the powers of darkness, we must decide: Do we follow Him, or not? Once we begin to realize the decision is called for, we are in a bit of danger.

Jesus tells a parable of a restless demon to illustrate this. If we are awakened to the spiritual realities of the world, it is as if we have been freed from the lies of darkness. However, if we do not embrace truth, and fill our hearts and minds with it, we are even more susceptible to be filled by the lies of the world all over again.

As Jesus was teaching this, a woman called His mother blessed to have given birth to Him. Jesus responds by saying that it is even more blessed to obey the word of God. This is the choice we have. If we see that Jesus is either liar, lunatic, or Lord and we decide He is who He claims to be, the only sane choice is to follow Him. To live as He teaches. To obey and live life as the One who created us designed it to be lived. All other choices are folly.

People declare, “if only God would show Himself more clearly, then people would believe!” How could God be more clear than becoming a flesh-and-blood man and living among us. In the days of Jonah, Nineveh repented at his mere words. However, many in Jesus’s day did not believe God in person. Today, we will never receive a better sign than Jesus and what He did.

This decision revolves around truth and our acceptance of it. The truth of God is like a light that illuminates the world and life for us. It makes sense of things. It gives us a clear way forward in this broken world where things are not as they were intended. It gives us hope for a world made right. We need to be a part of that light, bringing truth, purpose, and hope.
