The City of God (Isaiah 26:1-21)
Parallel to the oracles against Israel and Jerusalem, we unsurprisingly now get the vision of the City of God. Contrasted with the City of Meaninglessness, Zion is a strong city, secure in peace with God. Saved from His wrath and judgment. Before God brings ultimate judgment against all evil in the world, those who will humbly turn to Him are welcomed into the safety of His city. Those who trust Him enter and are locked away from the judgment to come.
That judgment is pictured as a reduction to dust. Utter destruction that makes the way clear and easy for people to navigate, compared to the evil and danger that characterized the world before. In contrast to those who humbly trust God, the proud of the world are humbled. The City of Meaninglessness is rendered blind to the truth of God. They rejected Him so long that they cannot see Him in the end, when judgment is delivered.
By contrast, the people in the City of God get what they wished for. Peace with God, His ways and His Name made great in all the earth. The help and rescue from the evil powers and oppressions of the world is real. Those evils, those powers, are no more. Even their memory is faded and gone.
