The Temple Destruction and Signs of the End (Luke 21:5-11)

When Jesus is asked when the destruction will happen, and for signs to indicate that it is near, He does not tell them when the end will come. Instead, He tells His disciples a list of things that will not mean the end is coming. False messiahs and messengers, wars and conflicts, earthquakes, famines, plagues, and persecution, will all come and not mean the end.

People since the time of Jesus have seen the evil in the world and assumed it was too much. “Surely God is about to come and set things right!” However, two things remain true:

1. The world is broken. We see more wars and natural disasters today than ever before. But do we really? There is a good chance we simply see more than we used to be able to. We have the ability to monitor activity the world over. By this, we just know better that the world is really broken. It has been that way since we broke it.

2. And God is patient. Everyone’s one time is the worst of times. We look back on days gone by as the good days. Yet for all the wrong in the world today, there have been worse times before. God is gracious and patient, allowing as many as can the chance to live and turn to Him in faith. He might still want to give us another day. He had mercy on worse times before ours. He may have mercy on more to come.

The very first warning here from Jesus, is that many will come saying the end is near. Never follow someone with that message.
