Awake! (Isaiah 51:9-52:12)

Isaiah now gives us a three-part discussion introduced with the call for someone to wake up.

First, Israel cries out for YHWH to awake. This feels current. People are always lamenting the fact that God is distant, quiet, and unseen. It is easy to mistake Him for a slumberer. Israel in the days Isaiah envisions will cry out to God for another Exodus. However, God’s answer to them and to us today is that He is in control. He is not silent or absent; we just aren’t looking in the right places.

Now, God calls for Israel to wake themselves. The problem with God’s people is that they have been in a stupor. That is what sent them into exile to begin with. They were drunk in their privilege and perceived righteousness. They have not woken up to the fact that God has been in control the whole time. He is the one who summoned the invading nations. He was not overcome. Now, He will deliver justice for His people again.

“Awake, awake!” This time it is YHWH calling His people. They should gather their own strength to exit the land. They were given over by God for no price, now they will be set free for free as well. They will reenter the land with celebrations.
