The Dumbing of the West
Like most of the rest of the world, I have stumbled upon video clip after video clip of people being baffled at how a mirror can, “see what is on the other side of a piece of paper. It is a supreme example of the absolute “idiocracy” taking over western culture. It is especially annoying because it is a case of people simply not thinking. You do not need higher education to understand the way angles work.
However, there are increasing examples of people abandoning thought in ways that expose our dire educational vacuum. In 2021, the University of New Hampshire found that as many as 10% of US citizens believe that the earth is flat. One in ten. This is not a controversial issue. People have known the earth was a sphere since way before we were able to send objects high into the thermosphere and observe it. Another troubling area of dumbing influence is found in medicine and the science of vaccination. The amazing advances and increased lifespans of people achieved since the discovery of vaccines is at threat from people who have decided not to believe in the evidence of over 200 years. Pretty soon, we might have people claiming that germs don’t exist. “I can’t see them, so they aren’t real!”
A troubling trend in all of this anti-intellectualism is that it holds a huge sway in religious circles. Nowhere does the bible say that people should be anti-education. We are never told to look at creation as an untrustworthy witness. In fact, creation not only reveals the Creator’s nature, but it is also good and truthful and trustworthy. Those are things we can learn about God through His creation. He is not capricious nor dishonest.
The founders of the scientific method were almost all bible-believing Christians. The advances of the enlightenment were born in Christian cultures. Some of the most brilliant philosophers and scientists were also theologians. You do not need to be dumb to be a good Christian.
