The Blind Man (Luke 18:35-43)
Christ Healing the Blind by Philippe de Champaigne
Luke carries the story forward into Jerusalem by relating three stories before Jesus arrives. The first two are stories around Jericho, the third is a parable.
As they approach Jericho, a blind man begins to cry out for Jesus. He believes Jesus is the Messiah, calling out to Him by His title “Son of David.” Even though the people try to quiet him, he persists. When Jesus has him brought over, he does not ask for money or beg. He wants a miracle. He believes Jesus can heal him. He does, and due to the man’s trust and faith, He also says his sins are forgiven.
I often imagine Luke’s process. We know that he was a serious historian. How did he hear about this story? I suspect he interviewed the man. The story concludes with the blind man following Jesus. He probably followed and became one of the early church members. He probably shared his testimony to everyone he met. He was blind, but now he sees! This is the way followers of Jesus behave. We tell the story of what Jesus has done for us. We testify to the changes He brings.
