Everything In Light of the Cross (Luke 9:51-56)

Jesus determines to head to Jerusalem, where He will face danger and death. This is why He has come into the world, after all. On the way through Samaria, He is not welcomed by a village. When James and John offer to make an example of the village, Jesus rebukes them.

The disciples understood that they were on the winning side, but they misunderstood what that meant. Jesus did not come for those who loved Him. None of us would fit into that category if it were up to us. We all have rejected God. Jesus didn’t come to power His way through the enemies of God. Again, we all fit into that category. Jesus came to die for those who had rejected God, those in rebellion, those who were self-absorbed.

The rest of the Gospel of Luke is pointed straight at the cross. Living after the cross, we need to think about what that means for us as followers of Jesus. For the disciples on that day, it meant they would face rejection with love.
