The Storm: Authority Over Nature (Luke 8:22-25)

Luke has already recorded six miracles, including exorcisms, healings, supernatural occurrences and a resurrection. Now he is going to explore more miracles, one of each sort, to illustrate Jesus’s authority.

The first miracle shows Jesus’s authority over the natural world. He and the disciples are crossing the sea when a severe storm sweeps in. Jesus is unconcerned enough that He is fast asleep. However, the disciples are so fearful for their lives that they wake Him. He silences the storm with a simple rebuke. Where is their faith, He asks.

Jesus, being God, has complete authority over the natural world. He can command the wind and the rain. Beyond that, however, He is in control. Those of us who follow Him and serve His kingdom need not worry about our safety. As long as He is still using us, we are safe. His plans will not be thwarted. If it is time in His plans for us to die, we can’t stop that from happening. This is not to say that we should be reckless, but we do not need to worry. In fact, worry is a sin according to the Bible. Faith and worry do not work well together.
