Lord’s Supper Institution (Luke 22:14-23)
I love how God uses stories, recounted history, and meals in His revelation. Here in the institution of the Lord’s Supper, we see this as Jesus shares the Passover meal with His disciples. It is especially relevant to the moment, because Jesus is about to become the Passover Lamb to and all sacrifice for all time.
What is not known to Christians as much these days, is the way that the Passover meal told a story. It was a meal, but it also helped the Jews to remember the most important event in their history: the Exodus. God has saved them from slavery and made them His own special, chosen people. Jesus takes the story and helps the disciples see (although they will not understand until later) how He is going to fulfill God’s plan in the way that the Exodus did not fully do.
In the Passover meal, there are four symbolic cups shared by the family. These cups remember the “I wills” of Exodus 6:6,7…
6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
We see evidence of the multiple cups here in Luke’s account. He refrences two of the cups, whereas the other gospels only mention one.
The 3rd cup of the meal is the second one that Luke mentions, taken after the meal. This is called “the Cup of Redemption.” I will take you to be my people. Jesus tells His disciples that his blood is the blood of the new covenant.
Some think that the fourth cup, “the Cup of Consummation” is skipped by Jesus. Instead, the cross itself is the consummation of this particular Passover.
