Response to the Servant p2: The Great Invitation (Isaiah 55)
Isaiah continues his poetic calling for a response to the revelation of the Servant’s mission. To God’s people he had called for the responses of song, trust, and hope. Now, to the nations of the earth, he offers an invitation to response.
Come! (vv.1-5)
The nations are invited to come to YHWH. Anyone can come. The cost is free. The benefits are eternal. The false gods of the world offer lies that do not satisfy. With YHWH, we can have all our needs met, truly met, at no cost. We can have restored relationship with the God who created and designed us for that relationship. We can have meaning, purpose, belonging, security, love, and everything else our hearts long for.
Seek! (vv. 6-9)
We are invited to find God before it is too late. We need to return to Him. We have run far away from Him and his designs for life as it should be lived. As we are designed to live. As we can be fulfilled and joyful in living. God’s ways are vastly different from the ways we have set up for ourselves. However, our ways are broken and lead to death. God’s are the ways that we were created to live in, and lead to life.
Find! (vv. 10,11)
God’s ways can be found, not because we can discover them on our own, but because He has revealed them. Just as the water needed to produce life on the earth comes from heaven and is not within our control, God’s ways are poured out on humanity and revealed from God. His word is true, wise, and does not lead to brokenness and death.
Rejoice! (vv. 12,13)
The new future envisioned in Isaiah’s prophecy, the results of the Servant’s success, are a new creation. Earth will be restored and will be as God intended it to be. All of nature will be in harmony, and more importantly, we will be in harmony as well. In harmony with nature, with each other, and with God, our Creator. In the same way freedom was better than the slavery of Egypt, and the promised land better than the long wilderness wandering, our future with God is a new Exodus. Freedom from the slavery of sin is a source of joy. The secure hope of a restored, eternal, heaven and earth brought together, will be what our hearts have always longed for.
