Super Conundrum
I woke up Monday morning to the realization that I am living my best life. At least as far as my entertainment choices are concerned. I hadn’t seen the Super Bowl. Until a couple days before, I didn’t even know who was playing. And I certainly hadn’t heard of Bad Bunny before. I think when someone told me that was going to be the halftime show, I had a vague image of a DJ like Deadmou5, but with rabbit ears. However, when I learned it was a Puerto Rican singer, I suddenly knew why certain people would be upset. "How dare someone book a Spanish entertainer to perform 'America’s Show!'”
When I was in High School, I very briefly entertained the idea of becoming a political cartoonist. My art teacher was all on board. That idea didn’t last long. Mostly due to the fact that they have to think about politics all the time. That does not sound like anyone’s best life.
It feels like we have been a cartoon version of the punk rock song “American Jesus” by Bad Religion for a while now, but it feels like we may be turning a corner. Even some of my most die-hard acquaintances seem to be turning on the current leader in chief after his most recent racist shenanigans. Up until now they have tried to argue that there is no racism there, but it is getting impossible to defend. One can only hope that the perception filter claiming anti-Christian ideals are “Christian” is starting to fade.
Meanwhile, if I were a political cartoonist, this is the cartoon I would have published for Sunday. Just because the whole world stops and watches the bread and circuses every year does not mean the church should. I’m not even saying don’t watch if you genuinely like the sport. Just don’t have FOMO about it! And certainly don’t pretend it is some sort of spiritual gauge or litmus test!
