Historical Interlude Part 2: Hezekiah (Isaiah 38-39)

In a continuation of the historical interlude about Hezekiah, Isaiah relates a story about how YHWH heals the king and gives him an extension on his life. Then emissaries from a far away, lesser power, Babylon arrive. Hezekiah shows them all of his treasures and secrets. Perhaps in an effort to impress them.

When Isaiah finds out, he reprimands the king. Doesn’t the king know that he has given these men both a motivation, and helpful information, for them to invade? What a foolish act! Isaiah foretells the invasion of Judah and their ultimate exile, at the hands of Babylon.

Hezekiah’s response? “Good! At least it won’t happen in my days!” Foolish and irresponsible in the end.
