The Sermon on the Plain (4) Love and Reward (Luke 6:35)
Followers of Jesus are to be characterized by their love. They do good, they help and lend with no expectation of repayment. The reward they anticipate is great, but it is not a reward they earn by loving, doing good, or helping. We love, and do good because of what Christ has done for us. It is not our work that makes us sons of God—Christ has done that. We do the good expected of us because that is what is expected of God’s children.
Obedience + ME ≠ God’s Love or Sonship
God’s Love + Me = Obedience
The reason why we behave in this way in God’s family is because that is how God is. God shows kindness to those who do not believe in Him, even those who are evil. Any blessing in any person’s life is a blessing from God. Even the people who are God’s enemies experience good things in life. He is loving, patient, and good to all. So should we.
