Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Saturday Monster Movies
The Legendary Monster Verse took things even more in the crazy direction in 2021. As apocalyptic and destructive as “Godzilla King of Monsters” seemed to be, the world and humanity is still functioning. Humans have even made peace with one Kaiju, Kong. And they have plans for Godzilla as well. When Godzilla begins mysteriously attacking facilities worldwide, scientists at Apex Cybernetics use Kong to locate the Hollow Earth, the birthplace of Titans and a potential energy source. As Kong is transported, he encounters Godzilla, leading to a dramatic ocean battle. With the help of a girl, Jia (who can communicate with Kong), Kong journeys to the Hollow Earth and finds his ancestral throne and a powerful energy source.
Meanwhile, Apex Cybernetics' true intentions are revealed: they’ve created Mechagodzilla, a mechanized weapon powered by Hollow Earth energy to replace Godzilla. However, the artificial Titan goes rogue after being influenced by Ghidorah’s neural imprint, threatening to destroy both humanity and Titans. Godzilla and Kong team up to defeat Mechagodzilla in a climactic battle, acknowledging each other’s strength and parting peacefully. The film ends with Kong retreating to rule in the Hollow Earth while Godzilla remains Earth's protector.
If this all seems convoluted and increasingly improbable, it is because it is. The messages of most other Godzilla films are regurgitated in one way or another: humanity’s hubris backfiring, humanity’s attempts to control nature backfiring, the need for balance, etc. However, there is an interesting message about communication being vital to resolving conflict. Jia and Kong, and Godzilla and Kong, show examples of how actually communicating is often a good way forward when no resolution seems possible.
