The Servant Song (Song 2) (Isaiah 49:1-13)
In the second Servant Song, we hear the words of the Servant Himself, the Messiah. He calls on the entire world to hear His words, the way that YHWH called on the world to witness back in chapter 41. This is God speaking. The Messiah is God. God become human. He is called before birth, before the incarnation in His mother’s womb. He is equipped and prepared as God’s weapon, but held in hiding, in secret. He is made human to show what Israel was intended to be. The true Servant of God. Humanity as it was created to be.
In the words of the Servant, we see the discouragement. The people He came to redeem will not respond. They will not believe the testimony of their eyes. However, the Servant will not trust His feelings, or the response of the nation. God is in control. God will redeem the remnant through Him. Not only that, God will redeem people from every nation! His salvation will reach the ends of the earth!
Even though it will appear as though He has failed, and was rejected, He will be raised up above all kings and rulers. The covenant with God will be restored and fulfilled and its promises made good. The world will rejoice in the Servant.
