The Empty Tomb (Luke 24:1-12)

In Luke’s account, we get a great first-hand report. You can feel the confusion, the suspense, and the wonder at the empty tomb. We have lived in a world for 2,000 plus years of people being used to the story. This can make it feel less amazing. But this is an event that is unique in creation, and unique in human history. All of the harmonizations and retellings have made it routine. However, here we see Luke must have interviewed people who lived through the events, and we get the fresh story.

The women arrive at the tomb and it is open. When they look inside, it is empty! There is no mention of the guard. Angels appear, but in their experience, they did not realize they were angels. When they women tell the disciples, they are dismissed. Only Peter is said here to have gone to the tomb. He sees the grave clothes but cannot figure out what it all means.

This is the account you would expect if you had never realized that the Messiah was going to die as a sacrifice, but that He would rise from the dead! This is the way the story needs to be told, as it happened, not immediately clarified. Luke lets the history unfold.
