PS22
when I think of what you did
became flesh, suffered, and died
my understanding is transformed
the paragon of mankind
dependence
not determination
humility
not might
world-rejected
not adoration
sacrifice
not fight
may I daily dwell in Your passion
every tear a treasure’s worth
study in love’s academy
ever grow in this new birth
10/19/26
(Notes from 9/22/1998)
David was a prophet (Acts 2:30). Peter said that based on Psalm 16, but to me, this is the most amazing piece of prophecy. It’s as if David was swept ahead in time and experienced what Christ would go through. Jesus even quoted this psalm on the cross, directing us to make the connection. Prophecy is foretelling in addition to forthtelling. God is truly powerful.
It is amazing that we so easily forget what Jesus went through for us. I don’t mean that we forget he died for us. No Christian does that. We forget how He suffered and died for us. It was too terrible to contemplate.
Thank You, God for the sacrifice You made for me.
Update:
It was just a few years after this that “The Passion of the Christ” came out. Then for a moment, Christianity seemed to go from not thinking enough about the cross to maudlinizing it. (An ironic thing, ethnographically!) I still think today, that it is a difficult thing to correctly reflect upon the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. We ought to do a lot more reflecting and dialoguing about it. We need to preach the gospel to ourselves more, and grow in our ability to be better witnesses to what it means and how it impacts our lives, day-in and day-out.
